year

Definition

A year is the time it takes for Earth to orbit the Sun once. It is about 365 days long.

The Earth's orbit is not a perfect circle, so the length of a year can vary slightly. This is why we have leap years every four years, to make up for the difference.

Years are divided into 12 months, each with 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. The months are named after Roman gods and goddesses.

How can the word be used?

The year 2023 is a leap year.
