Alessandro Volta

Alessandro Volta was an Italian physicist and chemist who is best known for inventing the voltaic pile, the first battery.

Volta was born in Como, Italy, in 1745. He showed an early aptitude for science, and he studied at the University of Pavia, where he earned a degree in philosophy.

After graduating, Volta taught physics at the University of Pavia. He also did research in electricity, and in 1799 he invented the voltaic pile.
