This unit is aligned with the AQA Science specification and is designed to be sequenced flexibly. However, it is structured with the assumption that each year builds upon the knowledge and skills developed in previous units.
Both substantive knowledge (scientific content) and disciplinary knowledge (working scientifically) are taught in context, ensuring that key scientific principles are reinforced through practical application. This unit covers key aspects of Atomic Structure & Mixtures, including the structure of the atom, the development of atomic models, and methods of separating mixtures. Students will explore techniques such as filtration, crystallisation, chromatography, and distillation, reinforcing their understanding through hands-on investigations. The unit incorporates hierarchical elements of working scientifically, allowing pupils to progressively develop their investigative skills, including making observations, recording data, and evaluating methods. While prior learning from earlier key stages is considered, the unit also provides prompts and scaffolds to support understanding, ensuring accessibility for all learners.
To support ongoing assessment and deep learning, a variety of Assessment for Learning (AFL) strategies are embedded within each lesson. These include retrieval practice, formative questioning, and structured activities designed to reinforce key concepts, address misconceptions, and develop long-term retention of knowledge.
Developing Experts is committed to supporting schools in delivering the National Curriculum effectively. Our curriculum design is primarily guided by National Curriculum content, but we also extend beyond these requirements to provide greater challenge and aspiration. This is achieved by connecting classroom concepts to real-world applications, particularly in the world of work.
We are proud to have Rolls-Royce SMR as the sponsor of this unit. As pioneers in clean energy, Rolls-Royce SMR is revolutionising the approach to nuclear power by developing scalable, low-cost, and globally deployable solutions. Their expertise is rooted in Rolls-Royce’s world-class heritage in nuclear technology and manufacturing, positioning them at the forefront of innovation in sustainable energy.
Throughout this unit, students will hear directly from experts at Rolls-Royce SMR, gaining insight into real-world applications of science in careers such as Engineering Test Lead, Conventional Environment Lead, and Environmental Scientist, to name a few. These industry professionals share their knowledge and experiences, helping to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
