filtration

a process used to separate solids from liquids or gases by passing the mixture through a filter medium that allows the liquid or gas to pass through, but retains the solid particles

filter medium

a porous material such as a filter paper, a ceramic material or a cloth

filter paper

a paper-based barrier used to separate solid substances from liquids or gases

filtrate

the liquid or gas that passes through the filter medium and is collected on the other side of the filter; it is composed of the liquid or gas that was present in the mixture being filtered, but without the solid particles that were retained by the filter

residue

the solid particles that remain on the filter after filtration; it is composed of the solid particles that were present in the mixture being filtered, and is typically collected for further analysis or disposal

Peter Klappa studied Biology (BSc Hons and MSc) at the Ludwigs-Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, where he also obtained his PhD in molecular and cellular biology. He is a National Teaching Fellow and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. As a trained Biology and Chemistry teacher, Peter has taught sciences for over 30 years, both at pre- and post-entry to university. For his excellence in teaching, Peter has received numerous awards and prizes and was nominated for the Teacher of the Year award by the Higher Education Academy in 2015 and 2019.

Required Resources

Resources: Two litre plastic bottle; scissors; cotton wools; activated carbon; sand; gravel; beaker; jug; water; soil and small solid pieces (e.g. bits of plastic).
