English National Curriculum - Science Science
Mission Objectives
Describe photosynthesis as a chemical process, naming the reactants and products
Describe the conditions that affect photosynthesis
Draw conclusions from experimental data
Words and meanings to learn
photosynthesis
the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesise nutrients from carbon dioxide and water
chlorophyll
any one of a class of pigments found in a plant which is the main site of absorption in the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis
reactant
a substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction
products
something made during a chemical process
UV light

Shannon started her journey with Developing Experts by completing PHD placement while studying for her Doctorate in Developmental Biology at the University of East Anglia. Shannon has since joined the team full-time as a Project Manager working with the company's industry partners. Shannon knows a lot about chickens!
Maria completed her PGCE at Oxford in 2005 and taught at schools in Oxford and London before taking time out for family and travel. Maria has led INSET for teachers in Ukraine and gained her Scouting Wood Badge in Belgium. Since returning to the UK and the classroom in 2019, Maria has been awarded Chartered Science Teacher status and more recently, Lead Practitioner. She is also on the Editorial Board for School Science Review, the ASE Journal, and currently teaches at The Charter School East Dulwich as KS5 Science Lead.
Resources: The handout and craft materials such as polystyrene/plastic balls and cocktail sticks.
Core Handout: A space for the students to read the descriptions of the photosynthesis experiments from history and write what each scientist could conclude from their experiment, plus some general questions on photosynthesis.
