Mission Objectives
Explain the organisation of elements into groups and periods in the periodic table, including the significance of atomic number and electron configuration
Identify and describe the key trends in atomic radius, ionisation energy, and electronegativity within the periodic table and explain how they relate to the properties of elements
Apply knowledge of the periodic table to predict the properties of elements and their compounds, and to analyse and interpret data related to the periodic table

Words and meanings to learn
group
a column in the periodic table of elements; elements found in the same group have similar chemical properties to one another
period
a row in the periodic table; the number of electrons an element has increases by one for every element in a period as you go from left to right
atomic number
the number of protons that a chemical element possesses
metals
a class of chemical elements that bond using metallic bonding, and which are typically lustrous solids that are good conductors of electricity and heat
neon
the chemical element of atomic number 10, an inert gaseous element of the noble gas group
Shannon started her journey with Developing Experts by completing PHD placement while studying for her Doctorate in Developmental Biology at the University of East Anglia. Shannon has since joined the team full-time as a Project Manager working with the company's industry partners. Shannon knows a lot about chickens!
Peter Klappa studied Biology (BSc Hons and MSc) at the Ludwigs-Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, where he also obtained his PhD in molecular and cellular biology. He is a National Teaching Fellow and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. As a trained Biology and Chemistry teacher, Peter has taught sciences for over 30 years, both at pre- and post-entry to university. For his excellence in teaching, Peter has received numerous awards and prizes and was nominated for the Teacher of the Year award by the Higher Education Academy in 2015 and 2019.
