Unit Summary

This first unit in waves is designed to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of waves and their properties. With 5 engaging lessons, students are taken on a journey from conceptualising waves to exploring how they manifest in the real world. In the opening lessons, we delve into the very essence of waves. Through interactive activities and thought-provoking discussions, students will grasp wave properties and behaviours, enhancing their ability to articulate these concepts accurately. The exploration then transitions to sound waves, bridging the gap between theory and tangibility; students will learn to describe sound properties and decipher how sound travels. They'll gain insights into the intriguing world of echolocation, showcasing real-life applications of sound wave principles.

Throughout Waves 1, we emphasise language precision and scientific communication, ensuring students cultivate a solid understanding of wave-related vocabulary and concepts. This serves as a stepping stone for their future studies in the field and at KS4.

During this unit you will hear from the following industry experts:

Kate’s journey as a science educator spans over 15 enriching years. Her passion for unravelling the complexities of the human body led her away from medicine (as she hates blood but loves medical t-shows) and into the world of teaching. She’s had the privilege of nurturing young minds in KS3 and KS4 science, guiding A-level Biology students, and even taught year 4 students in Spain, broadening her teaching horizons early in her career. Kate holds a Masters in Teaching (MTeach) and specialises in biology. Her research for her Master's degree focused on the profound impact of self-efficacy on classroom learning. Beyond the classroom, she finds solace in leisurely family walks and exploring new destinations through travel. She finds that the most rewarding aspect of teaching is witnessing those magical "light bulb moments" when students grasp the intricacies of science right before her eyes.
