Unit Summary

Curriculum

This unit is mapped against the AQA GCSE Science Trilogy specification and is designed to meet the requirements of the Atomic Structure topic. It is carefully structured to support both substantive knowledge (scientific content) and disciplinary knowledge (skills related to working scientifically) as outlined in the specification.

The unit is flexible and can be sequenced according to a school's curriculum plan, but it assumes that students are building upon prior knowledge from earlier years or previous units, such as the structure of the atom introduced in Key Stage 3. This progression aligns with the hierarchical nature of the content and the development of skills necessary for success in GCSE Science.

Developing Experts seeks to support schools to deliver the National Curriculum to children. Our choice of what to teach is primarily guided by the content specified in the National Curriculum, but we have also chosen to broaden this to increase challenge and build aspiration. We achieve this by exploring the application of concepts learned in the classroom in the world of work.

Developing Experts has worked with The National Nuclear Laboratory to produce this unit with the goal of ensuring that career choice is no longer left to chance, we are committed to connecting talent to local opportunity. The Gatsby Benchmarks, therefore, permeate our curriculum and careers library. The team worked with NNL staff at the. National Nuclear Laboratory who are committed to supporting young people to achieve their potential. You can find out about the careers and job vacancies at National Nuclear Labs in our careers zone.
