Unit Summary

This first biology unit delves into the realm of cells and explores their structures, functions and interactions within living organisms. Comprised of 8 engaging lessons that combine theory and hands-on activities to foster scientific curiosity and critical thinking, it enables students to cultivate essential skills in observation, description, comparison and analysis as they explore the microscopic world of cells.

The students will develop their proficiency in handling scientific equipment, specifically setting up and using a light microscope, before learning to identify and describe the unique features of plant and animal cells. The unit then takes a closer look at specialised cells and unicellular organisms. The concept of material exchange between cells is also explored, providing insight into the interconnectedness of cells within living organisms. Lastly, the unit explores multicellular organisms and aerobic respiration.

The integration of theoretical concepts and hands-on experiences empowers students to make informed and evidence-based conclusions about the intricate world of cells. This unit aligns with the ethos of Developing Experts and promotes career awareness by connecting science learning to real-world opportunities.

During this unit you will hear from the following industry experts:

        Name:                                  Job Title:

1.      Dr Ian Bedford                    Head of Entomology at the John Innes Centre

2.     Dr Jenni Stockan                Entomologist at the James Hutton Institute

3.     Professor Sunetra Gupta   Infectious Disease Epidemiologist / Professor of theoretical epidemiology

4.     Dr Rebecca Shreeve          Microbiologist

5.     Dr Sam Rowe                      Chemist and Science Communicator

This unit has been written by

Dr Shannon Weldon

Shannon started her journey with Developing Experts by completing PHD placement while studying for her Doctorate in Developmental Biology at the University of East Anglia. Shannon has since joined the team full-time as a Project Manager working with the company's industry partners. Shannon knows a lot about chickens!

Rebecca Willerton

Rebecca studied Psychology at the University of York before working in a variety of roles - in both the UK and internationally - where she assisted individuals with neurodegenerative and developmental conditions. She then completed her science teacher training with the National STEM centre, Royal Society of Chemistry and the Association for Science Education. Rebecca teaches biology and chemistry at Key Stage 4 and general science at Key Stage 3, and has also ran neuroscience and eco clubs at her school.
