Lesson Plan

DE LIVE Lesson - Science Week 2024

DE-LIVE-2024

Intent

Lesson Outcomes

  • Learn all about insects

National Curriculum

KS1:

  • Identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals
  • Identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other
  • Identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including microhabitats
  • Describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food
  • Notice that animals, including humans, have offspring which grow into adults

KS2:

  • Recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways
  • Describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird
  • Describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals
  • Describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences, including microorganisms, plants and animals
  • Recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents

Working Scientifically

KS1:

  • Identifying and classifying
  • Using their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions

KS2:

  • Recording findings using simple scientific language, drawings, labelled diagrams, keys, bar charts, and tables

Resources

Developing Experts will stream two LIVE lessons as part of Science Week 2024 on Friday 8th March. The link to the video will appear on the platform, in the sidebar, under Live Lessons.

Session 1: 9:30am for Reception and KS1
Session 2: 11am for KS2

These lessons are designed to take place within the classroom setting, so children can complete the activities on their handout during the LIVE lesson. Please print the appropriate handout prior to the session. Children will also need to take part in partner/class discussions. Accessing the LIVE lesson via the platform will enable teachers to comment and interact in the session - providing answers to the questions posed and asking questions throughout the session. We will try to mention as many schools as we can throughout the session!

Children will have the opportunity to ask Mike questions LIVE in the lesson. Teachers can submit these questions through the comment section. Children may wish to think about these questions in advance, and use the butterfly templates provided to write these questions. You can submit questions to us before, by sending a photo of the decorated butterfly questions, or live within the lesson. These questions should focus on insects and time.

Please note, if you are unable to attend the session live, a recording will be available shortly after the session for you to re-watch.

Implementation

Science Week 2024: Time

Session 1 - EYFS and KS1:

  • Activity 1: Tick the insects
  • Activity 2: Label the locust (for EYFS, pupils can be supported by looking at the diagram as a class and discussing labels together)
  • Activity 3: Order the stages of a beetle's life cycle
  • Activity 4: Comparison of an insect and millipede

Please note that some questions on the handout are aimed at older KS1 pupils. An additional EYFS handout has been provided which contains pictures and words relating to the beetle's life cycle for the children to match up.

Session 2 - KS2:

Please note, two handouts have been provided for this session. One is aimed at Lower KS2 (Years 3 & 4) and one is aimed at Upper KS2 (Years 5 & 6). Please print the most appropriate handout for your pupils.

  • Activity 1: Mind mapping insects
  • Activity 2: Label the locust
  • Activity 3: Order the stages of a beetle's life cycle (Challenge for Y5/Y6: Describe and draw metamorphosis)
  • Activity 4: Comparison of an insect, millipede and centipede

Teacher answers will be provided for both sessions on a separate handout.
