Mission Objectives
Explain the terms "evaporation" and "distillation"
Describe the differences between the two process
Separate mixtures by applying distillation and evaporation of two liquids
Words and meanings to learn
evaporation
the process by which a liquid is transformed into a gas or vapor
distillation
a separation process that involves heating a mixture of substances to a temperature at which one or more of the components will vaporise
crystallisation
a process of solidification in which a substance forms a crystalline solid from a liquid or a solid solution
simple distillation
a process of separation and purification that involves heating a mixture of liquids to a temperature at which one or more of the components will vaporise, and then condensing the resulting vapor back into a liquid
fractional distillation
unlike simple distillation, which only allows for the separation of two components with large boiling point differences, fractional distillation involves the repeated vaporisation and condensation of the mixture, allowing for the separation of components with more closely spaced boiling points
Shannon started her journey with Developing Experts by completing PHD placement while studying for her Doctorate in Developmental Biology at the University of East Anglia. Shannon has since joined the team full-time as a Project Manager working with the company's industry partners. Shannon knows a lot about chickens!
Peter Klappa studied Biology (BSc Hons and MSc) at the Ludwigs-Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, where he also obtained his PhD in molecular and cellular biology. He is a National Teaching Fellow and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. As a trained Biology and Chemistry teacher, Peter has taught sciences for over 30 years, both at pre- and post-entry to university. For his excellence in teaching, Peter has received numerous awards and prizes and was nominated for the Teacher of the Year award by the Higher Education Academy in 2015 and 2019.
Resources:
Distilling the essence of apple juice: 50 ml of apple juice; conical flask, delivery tube, beaker, water and a test tube.
Separating the salt from a salt water solution: water, salt and an evaporating dish.
Both tasks: Bunsen burner (or tealights); tripod; safety goggles and the handout.
Core Handout: A series of comparative questions on evaporation and condensation.
