Can the children explain the difference between summer and spring?
Can the children describe what spring is like?
Can the children describe what summer is like?
It is hot in the...
Things grow in the ...

Lesson Expert: Matt talks about how to keep safe from the Sun in the summer.

Mission Assignment

Seasonal outfits

Use the mission assignment video to help with this. Show the children different items you have brought in which could be worn in the different seasons. It is really easy to decide what to wear in the winter as it is very cold! In the summer, it is really hot! How do we know what to wear in the spring? Sometimes it can be rainy and cold! Other times, it might be hot.

Create an outfit for someone for the spring and an outfit for someone to wear in the summer. Can the children talk about what is different and why? Use the handout with some clothing ideas. The children could cut out the clothes on the handout or have a go at drawing the outfits themselves.

As an extension, the children could design an outfit for someone that would suit all seasons.

Impact & Assessment Opportunities

Plenary

Ask the children: what happens every year during the different seasons? How can we tell that the seasons are changing?

Teacher Mastery: There are 4 seasons in the UK: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Different seasons tend to have different weathers, different ecology and different amounts of daylight. We have seasons on Earth because of its orbit around the Sun. Spring is when the trees begin to grow again and flowers begin to bloom. This is the season where the seeds begin to take root and vegetation begins to grow. The temperature begins to increase again and we experience warmer climates. Animals will return from their migration or sprout up from their hibernation in the spring too. Rainfall can still be relatively heavy in this period. Summer is the hottest season of the year. Temperatures will reach their highest in this period. A lot of places will experience heat waves or even droughts, which may pose further problems to humans, animals and plants. The longest day of the year is in summer and is on the 21st of June every year.
