Mission Assignment

Make a Face

Watch the Mission Assignment film for some more help with this activity. Make a collage picture of a face and label the correct parts. The children should stick the face parts in the right place to create a face. Once this is completed, this face can be developed into a self-portrait face, or even a mask.

To encourage the children to properly learn the names of the body parts, they could label these and spell them correctly: ear, eye, nose, mouth, hair and face. Can they tell you what part of the face they use for different things - smelling, seeing, hearing, etc.?

Impact & Assessment Opportunities

Plenary

Look at the different face collages that have been made. Make a display of them and discuss why each child chose each particular part.

Teacher Mastery: Hair covers pretty much every single part of the body. You find hair on the head, the arms, the legs, the armpits, and even on the face. Hair is important because it helps to maintain the appropriate body temperature. Regulating body temperature is important, especially in different seasons when the environment changes too. The hair also protects the skin from the Sun. Different people have different hair colours. This depends on their parents' hair and their genes.

Eyes are important too. We need them to see everything around us. The eyes are pretty special organs. They give depth perception, which makes sure that people do not bump into things. On the eyes, there are eyelids and eyelashes. These are important because they prevent things like dust and dirt from entering the eye and causing infections.

Ears are needed because without them we wouldn’t be able to hear. We need two ears so that we can clearly hear sounds from both directions. Ears are also important in helping us to stay balanced.
