Words and meanings to learn
ozone layer
the invisible bubble that surrounds the earth and keeps all the oxygen on the inside; carbon dioxide causes damage to the ozone layer and reduces the oxygen levels
greenhouse gas
a gas that contributes to global warming, such as carbon dioxide
low carbon
a process that is based on power sources that don't release lots of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere
agriculture
the art and science of cultivating the soil, growing crops and raising livestock
carbon footprint
the amount of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gas that is released into the atmosphere by an individual's day-to-day activities
Resources: Class presentation, pens and pencils.
Handout: The handout provides a grid for the children to create the changes they plan to make. It then asks them to consider 5 areas, rank them in order of priority and write a brief explanation of why they have chosen the identified order. The challenge task asks the children to choose two of the identified areas and write a more detailed paragraph for each.
