Intent

Lesson Outcomes

  • Explore what financial institutions must do to play their part in combating climate change
  • Understand what financial institutions must do to play their part in combating climate change
  • Describe what financial institutions must do to play their part in combating climate change

Sustainability and Climate Change (Provisional Framework)

We will empower all young people to be global citizens, through a:

  • better understanding of climate change
  • greater connection to nature

Working Scientifically

  • Experimental skills and investigations
  • Asking questions and developing a line of enquiry based on observations of the real world, alongside prior knowledge and experience

Resources

Resources: Class presentation.

Handout: The activity sheet contains the following information. Ask the pupils to consider the school’s upstream emissions and how you can have a say in minimising them. Work together to investigate the supply chain of your school, filling out an action plan with your findings. Some example questions include:

  • Who supplies your energy and is it supplied responsibly?
  • Who supplies your water and is it supplied responsibly?
  • Who supplies your classroom supplies and are they supplied responsibly?
  • Who supplies your catering and is it supplied responsibly?
  • Who supplies your transportation needs and is it supplied responsibly?

Rocket words

  • Product Carbon Footprint
  • downstream activity
  • upstream activity
  • supply chain emissions
  • stakeholders

Implementation

Starter

What existing measures are in place which ensures your school's value supply chain reflects its commitment to global net zero? Your school's value supply chain are the companies that supply your school with the things it needs to run.

Main Teaching

This lesson explores what impact the school’s supply chain has on the environment and climate change. Through the task, pupils are given the opportunity to have a say in their school’s supply chain, understand the terms associated with it and investigate different areas that have an impact.

Career Film: This is Colin Fairbairn. Colin works as a Senior Technologist for National Nuclear Laboratory.

Expert Film: Understanding the math behind Microsoft’s commitment to become carbon negative by 2030.

Mission Assignment

Ask the pupils to consider the school’s upstream emissions and how they can have a say in minimising them. Work together to investigate the supply chain of your school, filling out an action plan with your findings. Some example questions include:

  • Who supplies your energy and is it supplied responsibly?
  • Who supplies your water and is it supplied responsibly?
  • Who supplies your classroom equipment and are they supplied responsibly?
  • Who supplies your catering and is it supplied responsibly?
  • Who supplies your transportation needs and is it supplied responsibly?

Consider:

  • Writing a supply chain policy
  • Designing a communications strategy
  • Creating an action plan to measure your school's emissions supply chain
  • Writing an action plan which works towards global net zero

Challenge task: Taking the supply chain emissions into account, design an eco-school and an eco-school system. Evaluate your school with your current school in mind. How achievable is this?
