An Overview of DE’s KS1 and KS2 Geography Curriculum

Our brand-new geography curriculum is almost here! Launching soon on the Developing Experts platform, this curriculum is ideal for all geography leads and primary school teachers. Whether you’ve been using Developing Experts’ science curriculum for a while or you’re completely new to our products, we know our new units will make an impact. 

Here’s a brief rundown of everything you can expect from our new geography curriculum. 

Year 1

My School: This unit focuses on map work and developing your pupils’ understanding of their local area. 

The World: One of our already-released sample units, these lessons introduce world geography, building the pupils’ understanding of scale. 

The United Kingdom: In this unit, pupils learn about the UK. They will begin to name and locate the UK’s countries and the surrounding seas. 

Year 2 

The United Kingdom: Pupils build on their knowledge from Year 1 by looking at capital cities and key geographical facts. 

The World: This unit introduces the hot and cold areas of the world, exploring how climate affects people and places. 

Where We Live: This unit builds on the pupils’ understanding of their local area. They further develop their map-reading skills and explore how symbols are used. 

Year 3

Biomes: Building on the pupils’ knowledge of continents and the world, this unit enables your pupils to explore different biomes and understand why they are important. 

Italy: Focusing on Venice as a region in a European country, this unit explores the climate, cities, landmarks and culture across Italy. 

Settlements: This unit introduces the different types of settlements: hamlets, villages, towns and cities. 

Year 4

Europe: This unit builds on knowledge gained from Years 1-3 by exploring European geography. 

Volcanoes, Mountains and Earthquakes: Our sample unit for Year 4, this unit explores key geographical phenomena like volcanoes and the impact they have on people around the world. 

The United Kingdom: This unit builds on the pupils’ knowledge of the UK by exploring counties, focusing on unique food, wildlife and culture. 

Year 5

Our Connected World: This unit explores some key terms and concepts in geography: time zones, hemispheres and world trade. 

Our Local Area: This unit further progresses your pupils’ map-reading skills, focusing on grid references and how local areas are developed over time. 

Our Blue Planet: Another sample unit, these lessons explore the world’s water bodies, including oceans and rivers, and the water cycle. 

Year 6 

North America: Introducing your pupils to the physical and human features of North America, this unit also explores important challenges such as earthquakes and wildfires. 

The Amazon Rainforest: Revisiting content from Year 3 - Biomes, the lessons here focus on issues facing the Amazon rainforest. 

My Place: The final unit in our geography curriculum, ‘My Place’ gives pupils the opportunity to showcase the knowledge and skills they’ve developed throughout their primary education.
