All About DE’s Glossary and Rocket Words

Our approach to vocabulary and literacy: rocket words and our online glossary

In education, the role of vocabulary in enhancing literacy and knowledge retention cannot be overstated. In science, pupils often need to grasp terminology before they can fully understand new topics, so spending time on new vocabulary is essential. At DE, we’ve developed a fluid approach to bolstering science literacy through our online glossary and lesson-specific rocket words.

  1. The importance of vocabulary in science education

One of the difficulties found in science is that it is a whole language unto itself - from Latinate terms in evolutionary biology to the abundance of equations and symbols in chemistry, science is rich in specialised terms and concepts. However, mastering vocabulary not only prompts comprehension - and discussions - but also lets pupils to fully engage with the scientific enquiry skills. Research consistently demonstrates a strong link between vocabulary knowledge and achievement across all subjects, making it an important element to consider.

  1. DE’s rocket words: igniting vocabulary acquisition

At the very centre of our approach lies the rocket words, strategically selected keywords embedded within every lesson. These words serve as linguistic launchpads, propelling pupils towards a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. By placing the words at the beginning of the lesson, you have a chance to read out, discuss and address any questions about each word before continuing through the lesson. The presentation then highlights each term in context, reinforcing their meanings and creating connections between concepts. This contextual approach also promotes transferability, enabling pupils to apply their new knowledge across different topics.

  1. DE’s glossary: knowledge at your fingertips

Our online science glossary can be accessed by anyone with a subscription to DE and allows pupils to easily engage with vocabulary resources. This accessibility empowers pupils to engage with vocabulary resources outside of lessons and the classroom, helping them to learn independently and reinforcing concepts at their own pace. It is a versatile and indispensable tool in the science classroom!

Through our approach, we aim to help you and your pupils to use new scientific vocabulary with confidence.
