5 science experts you need to meet!

Here at Developing Experts, we’re all about delivering aspirational, expert learning content. In order to provide a comprehensive science education, we ensure that every lesson features an expert in the field.

Here at Developing Experts, we’re all about delivering aspirational, expert learning content. In order to provide a comprehensive science education, we ensure that every lesson features an expert in the field; from astronomy and climatology to chemistry and oceanography, we have sourced the best global scientists to bring to our platform.

Here are five science experts that you need to meet:

1. Prof. Laura Bowater

Microbiologist Laura’s career has followed a rich and varied path. Laura began her career at the University of St Andrews where she graduated with a BSc in Biochemistry with Microbiology, before moving to the University of Dundee for a MSc and a PhD in Biochemistry. She is now based at the University of East Anglia in Norwich as the Academic Director for Innovation.

Laura features alongside Dr. Sam Rowe in our Explain why mutations occur KS3 science lesson. In this lesson you’ll find Laura sharing knowledge with your learners on genetic mutations.

Find Laura here.

2. Prof. Sunetra Gupta

Prof. Sunetra Gupta is currently a Professor of Theoretical Epidemiology at the University of Oxford.

Sunetra’s main area of interest is the evolution of diversity in pathogens, with particular reference to the infectious disease agents that are responsible for malaria, influenza and bacterial meningitis. Sunetra works closely with laboratory and field scientists to both develop and test these hypotheses.

Sounds interesting, right? You’ll find Sunetra sharing her wealth of expertise with Developing Experts learners in our KS3 science lesson, The importance of bacteria in the human digestive system.

Find Sunetra here.

3. Dr. Ian Bedford

Dr. Ian Bedford, a scientist based at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, is currently Head of the Entomology Facility. Ian’s areas of expertise are invertebrates, entomology, plant-insect interactions, crop protection, bioassay design, integrated pest management, and insecticides.

Not short on a range of scientific knowledge, Ian features in our KS3 science lesson on The impact of insect pollination on human food security.

Find Ian here.

4. Dr. Karim Gharbi

Dr. Karim Gharbi currently holds the position of Head of Genomics Pipelines at the Earlham Institute in Norwich. Karim is a biologist with an impressive two decades of experience in genomics and a passion for scientific discovery and innovation.

With over 50 publications to his name, the Developing Experts team were thrilled to collaborate with Karim and his colleagues at the Earlham Institute. He'll be featuring on lessons related to DNA, inheritance, and genetics.

Find Karim here.

5. Sophie Prosolek

Last but certainly not least, Sophie Prosolek is a local scientist that the Developing Experts teams are thrilled to have worked with. Sophie is a PhD student at the Quadram Institute and her research focuses on the genetic control of cellular energy metabolism in the human liver.

You can find Sophie sharing her expertise with Dr. Sam Rowe in a range of expert films. In our KS3 science lesson focusing on lipids and proteins, you’ll find Sophie and Sam discussing different types of lipids and the effects they have on our bodies.

Find Sophie here.

This is just an example of five excellent scientists featured within our lessons. However, here at Developing Experts we are thrilled to be able to work with over 100 expert scientists from around the world. As we continue to grow our network of scientists, with recent introductions including Helen Cavill and Dr. Suze Kundu, we are excited to continue providing Developing Experts users with expert learning content.
